Young Thanekars excel at 4th Mumbai Mayor's Cup

The Fourth Mumbai Mayor's Cup International Open Chess Tournament 2011 was held from 16th September 2011 to 24th September 2011 at Goregaon Sports Complex. Around 18 Grand Masters and 30 International Masters participated in this grand tournament. And along with all these masters,  young masters from Thane also excelled in this tournament and achieved International ratings.

Umakant Zanje, Shripad Gadre & Patrick D’souza,all hailing from Joshi’s Chess Academy Thane, achieved international rating in this event. Master Bhavesh Karnik, 8th standard student of Sau. A.K.Joshi, English Medium School, Thane, also from the same academy enhanced his international rating from 1699 to 1720 in this tournament. All the four players are training under Abhijit Joshi.

Abhijit Joshi, coach of the international rated players of Thane said, “This was an open group tournament and all the participants played really well. Four of my students achieved international ranking, which is a huge achievement for me as well for my students.” Talking about his student Bhavesh Karnik he proudly said, “He has already achieved international ranking last year itself and in this tournament he managed to goa step ahead and scored higher ratings.”

Participants from all over India, Russia, Armenia, Bangladesh, Uganda, Belarus, Nepal, Israel, Thailand, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Poland participated in this Fourth Mumbai Mayor’s Cup International Open Chess Tournament 2011. Out of these 270 participants, 215 were internationally rated players.

Fourth Mumbai Mayor’s Cup International Open Chess Tournament 2011 was a grand and a popular tournament thanks to the grand masters who participate in this tournament but along with this, the cash prize associated also adds up to the value of the tournament. The total cash prize of this tournament was 15 lakhs, highest amount for any chess tournament in allover India.

This tournament was organized by Venus Chess Academy, Andheri and was held under the auspices of Bombay Chess Association and played on Swiss Leauge Basis.
