Unity CSR Centre donates running shoes for the tribal kids running in the Thane Mayor Varsha Marathon this Sunday

The countdown to the 22nd Thane Mayor Varsha Marathon, 2011 began with a unique partnership between the Thane Municipal Corporation and Unity CSR Centre, the CSR division of Unity Infra Projects Private Limited.

Taking notice of the hundreds of tribal school children running in the TMVM 2011,Unity CSR Centre came forward to encourage and support their enthusiasm. Over 850 pairs of running shoes for these kids have been donated by Unity CSR Centre to ensure that the kids run smoothly during this event.

Incidentally, Indian’s only monsoon marathon organized by a civic body also allows the school and tribal children a free participation. The civic administration is working round-the-clock to ensure the run is a huge success. Thane Mayor Ashok Vaity said, “The TMC has always been keen to make this event a great experience and memorable day for all the participants and Thanekars. The enthusiasm of the tribal children in TMVM has been remarkable. On behalf of TMC, I thank Unity CSR for their initiative for these kids.”

Said Dr. Shweta Avarsekar, chairperson, Unity CSR Centre, “Child education and health services has been top of our agenda in all our activities. Children are close to our heart and when we heard that over 850 odd tribal school kids from Mokhada, Jawahar and Wada taluka are running for TMVM, 2011 we certainly wanted to help.”  Dr Avarsekar pointed out that Unity CSR Centre has already adopted Jawahar taluka for their project ‘Sangopan’ in association with Shabari Seva Samiti to improve the health of pregnant women, lactating mothers and children under age 5 by providing proper nutrition, education and health services. “Supporting these children with shoes is first step and we will continue to take up their cause in long term,” Dr. Avarsekar added.

The Thane Mayor Varsha Marathon, 2011 - the only Marathon in India organised and hosted by the civic body.  The Marathon will be flagged off on July 24 from the urban square – Marathon chowk, the only city in the world to have a space of this nature. Last year, the Marathon had a record participation of over 45,000 people and this year the registrations are already opened for this gala event.

On July 24, thousands participants from across the state and the Thane district will run in this race. While the professional runners will be running for the prize money, the highlight of this Marathon is the large presence of urban and tribal school children, who participate in record numbers every year.
